Bitcoin hits record high for first time in more than three years, according to data from blockchain platform, reports Business Insider

By Andrew Wainwright, Business Insider The digital currency bitcoin is surging in value, and its popularity is now reaching all corners of the internet, from the popular social network Facebook to the popular gaming app Pokemon Go.

Bitcoin has risen over $2,000 in just one week, according a report published on Wednesday by CoinDesk, with the cryptocurrency now valued at $8,200.

This is almost $2 million above the price at which it peaked on September 30, 2017, when it was trading at $2.70.

According to the report, the value of bitcoin has soared to a record high, with its market cap over $150 billion.

The bitcoin price is up nearly 3,000% since the start of 2017, with it hitting a high of around $7,300 on September 18.

This week, it has risen to a new high of $7.88, according the CoinDesk report.
